GREAT BRITAIN. Thames Tunnel Opening White Metal Medal, 1843. NGC MS-64.
BHM-2131. By William Griffin. Diameter: 36mm. Obverse: View of the twin tunnel entrances on the Rotherhithe (south) side with stairs and railings above and to right; legend in exergue below; Reverse: Twin tunnel entrance on the Wapping (north) side of the Thames, stair railings above; legend in exergue below. The opening of the tunnel was a celebratory event, though it would prove to be financially unsuccessful as costs exceeded the original estimates; open only to pedestrian traffic its usefulness (and revenue) was also limited. It was sold to a consortium of railway companies in 1865, and carried its first rail traffic in 1869. It continues to function as part of the East London Line. The white metal has darkened outside of the exergues, but all of the engraved detail remains. Historic and charming architectural medal.

Estimate: $40 - $60
