FRANCE. Duo of Medals (2 Pieces), 1836 & 1871. Grade Range : UNCIRCULATED to CHOICE UNCIRCULATED.
1) Enlargement of the Palace of the Chamber of Peers Bronze Medal, 1836. By J. Klagmann & A. Bovy. Diameter: 68mm. Obverse: Medallion with bust of Louis Philippe, left, above, supported by Hercules at left and Ceres at right, cherubs below, atop cartouche with seven-line inscription; Reverse: Allegories holding medallion with bust of Marie de Medici, right, with wide decorative border; seven-line legend in field; Edge: Pointing Hand and CUIVRE. Architect Alphonse de Gisors extended the Luxembourg palace, adding a Senate Chamber and a new garden wing, deftly matching the 17th century architecture. This medal has lovely glossy chocolate surfaces and frosted details. Very attractive. CHOICE UNCIRCULATED.

2) Memorial to the Victims of the German Invasion Silvered Bronze Medal, "1870-1871"(after 1880). By Emile Soldi. Diameter: 70mm. Obverse: Allegory of France standing, facing right, sword drawn, protecting victims; churches in background to left and right; signature on ground, otherwise anepigraphic; Reverse: Three-line legend in central field, dates below, two crossed palms below, all within stylized wreath; perimeter legend recalling invaded cities; Edge: Cornucopia and BRONZE. This short war resulted in the capture and deposition of Napoleon III, the loss of Alsace and Lorraine to Germany - a weakened France and strengthened Germany. Satiny surfaces as a result of the silver plating; attractive and historic. UNCIRCULATED.
