'lā ilāha illā / Allāh waḥdahū / lā sharīka lahū' ('There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him' in Arabic); in the margin, 'bism Allāh ḍuriba hādhā al-dirham bi madīnat Zaranj sana tisʿ wa sabʿīn wa miʾa' ('In the name of Allah. This dirham was struck in the city of Zaranj in the year 179' in Arabic). Rev. Citing his vizier Jaʿfar, 'Jaʿfar / Muḥammad rasūl Allāh / ṣalla Allāh ʿalayh wa sallam / li'l-khalīfa al-Rashīd / bakh' ('Jaʿfar. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. May Allah bless him and grant him peace. For Caliph al-Rashid.
