| Lot description: MEROVINGIANS. Uncertain. Circa 600-650. Triens (Gold, 12 mm, 1.29 g). PLA[...]O Stylized bearded male bustto right. Rev. [...]VΩIHC[...] Cross; single pellets in upper, Λ and C in lower quarters. Belfort -, cf. 3497 (differing legends). Cf. CGB Live Auction June 2020, 16 June 2020, 590303 (differing style and legends). Apparently unpublished. Struck somewhat off center and with minor scratches and flan cracks, otherwise, good very fine. Where exactly this lovely triens was issued is unclear. The fragmentary obverse legend likely for P(A)LA[TI M]O, referring to the coinage of a palace, while the reverse is derived from coins from Chalon-sur-Saone carrying C-A as an ethnic.
