| Lot description: UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 5th century AD or slightly later. Solidus (Gold, 20 mm, 4.52 g, 6 h), imitating Zeno, second reign (476-491), uncertain mint, after 476. D N ZENO PERP AVG Pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Zeno facing, his head turned slightly to right, holding spear in his right hand and with a shield, decorated with a horseman spearing a fallen foe, over his left shoulder. Rev. VICTOR-A (sic) AVCCC Δ / COIIOB (retrograde) Victory standing left, holding long jewelled cross; in field to right, star. Apparently unpublished. Slightly rough, otherwise, good very fine. This appears to be an unpublished Pseudo-Imperial issue struck by one of the Germanic tribes in Central Europe or, perhaps, in Italy. A purview of the relevant literature does not appear to turn up any related examples, with the exception of the Visigothic coin cited as RIC 3769, but this is of clearly different style.
