England/Great Britain. William & Mary (1688-1694). Danish Auxiliaries in Ireland, 1691. Danish Medal. Silver, 38mm. By Anton Meybusch. DA/NORVM/FOR/TIBVS.AVSIS - VI/RIBVS/VNI/TIS. inscribed on two shields affixed to a palm tree, rev. Hibernia standing left bracing shield with her hand and holding Victory who is about to crown her; RELE VATA. Disappointed with his alliance with Louis XIV and the lack of French support in the Danish territorial travails with Sweden, King Christian V of Denmark entered a military assistance treaty in 1689 with William of Orange. The Danish Auxiliary Corps, a corps of some 7,000 Danish soldiers was transported to Ireland to fight the Jacobites. There they participated in the battles of the Boyne and Aughrim and in the sieges of Limerick, Cork, Kinsale, Athlone and Galway. G.164, JS 399. Very rare. Toned over some old contact marks.
