Maria Theresa, born on May 13, 1717, was a prominent figure in European history as the Archduchess of Austria, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and the ruler of the Habsburg Monarchy. As the eldest daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Maria Theresa faced significant challenges early in her reign. The War of the Austrian Succession erupted in 1740 following her father's death, as Maria Theresa encountered opposition to her succession from various European powers. The conflict concluded in 1748 with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, solidifying her control over most of her father's dominions. Maria Theresa's reign is marked by extensive administrative and economic reforms. Recognized for her governance acumen, she strengthened the central authority of the Habsburg Monarchy, revamped taxation systems, and implemented educational reforms. Maria Theresa, a mother of 16 children, including Queen Marie Antoinette of France, navigated the challenges of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) and, despite setbacks, managed to retain much of her territory. Following her death on November 29, 1780, her son Joseph II succeeded her, continuing her efforts in shaping the destiny of the Habsburg realms.
