Lot description: Great Britain Henry VIII (1509-1547) Testoon ND (1544-1547) VF Details (Test Cut) NGC, Tower mint, Pellet in annulet mm, Third coinage, S-2365, N-1841. 7.66gm. Exceptionally difficult to locate, especially with this much remnant detail of the instantly recognizable front-facing portrait of Henry VIII and the large Tudor rose to the reverse. We've handled only a handful of this type in recent decades, and each garnering significant fanfare, with the present example demanding comparable treatment. Accompanied by original tags. One of the most revered silver types from Henry's reign for its prominent--and by historical indications, quite accurate-facing portrait of Henry VIII, which can easily be termed the piece's namesake ('testoon' quite literally meaning 'head piece'). Though a type which often does not permit full appreciation of its artistry due to poor production from ill prepared flans, shallow strikes, and often heavy wear, this specimen, struck upon a well prepared "good metal" planchet, is superior to many still extant.
