BRITISH HONDURAS. British Honduras - Mexico. Dollar (6 Shillings 1 Penny), ND (1810-21). George III. NGC EF-45.
KM-stamp not listed; Prid-stamp not listed; Roehrs Collection Pt.1-Lot # 6(same stamp); Byrne Collection-Lot # 1379(same stamp); Medina-Pg.224(same stamp). Incuse crowned block letter's "GR" countermark on an 1818-MoJJ Mexico 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII. SCARCE countermark variety. This somewhat crude style countermark is deeply applied and bold on a nicely preserved original looking host. The surfaces offer even wear displaying rich attractive gray patina with richer coloration in the protected areas adding to its pleasing appearance.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of official contemporary documentation the attribution to British Honduras is uncertain. Famous collector and author Major Fred Pridmore speculates that the merchants of the settlement applied the various crowned "GR" countermarks to dollars for trade with the indigenous Indian tribes between 1810-1818. Prior to 1810 the primary barter item with the Indians were cutlass blades stamped with "GR" in an attempt to continue trade, it is believed that a similar mark was applied to dollars mark to dollars continuing the accustomed unit of value. Stamping coins in this manner would not require official authority since it wouldn't have affected their currency value in the settlement.

Estimate: $1000 - $1500

BRITISH HONDURAS. British Honduras - Mexico. Dollar (6 Shillings 1 Penny), ND (1810-21). George III. NGC EF-40; Countermark: AU Weak.
KM-2; Prid-2. Countermark: Raised crowned script "GR" within ovaloid indent, late die state. Applied to the obverse of a 1818-Mo JJ Mexico bust 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII (KM-111). This handsome and moderately worn example displays lovely rich cabinet patina on the obverse with iridescent hues while the reverse offers a light gray color. The countermark, showing signs of degradation, is boldly on an attractive looking host. A SCARCE and wholly original looking issue offering good eye appeal.

According to famous collector and author Fred Pridmore, all of the so-called British Honduras countermarks were applied by merchants to facilitate trade with the local indigenous Indian tribes. However, due to lack of contemporary documentation this is speculative.

Estimate: $1000 - $1500

SCOTLAND. Scotland - Mexico. Renfrewshire. Greenock. 4 Shillings 6 Pence, ND (ca. 1820-28). NGC AU-55; Countermark: UNC Standard.
KM-CC58; Manville-57. Issued by McFie, Lindsay & Company, Greenock. Countermark: 4/6 within beaded border surrounded by: "*McFie Lindsay & Coy* Greenock". Applied to the obverse of a 1818-Mo JJ Mexico bust 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII (KM-111). Beautifully preserved and very attractive, this SCARCE and seldom encountered issue boasts a bold nearly complete countermark on a lovely high grade host. The surfaces offer a pleasing gray envelope tone with a slight iridescent sheen and plenty remaining luster in the protected areas. An outstanding example of the type with good eye appeal and much original worthy of a fine cabinet.

It is interesting to note that this issuer was active 1815-34 as general grocers. According to Manville, they are noted for having invented and perfected a method of preserving fresh salmon. Based on the known host dates it appears that McFie, Lindsay & Company issued tradesmans tokens from around the early 1820s to August 1828 when the company formerly recalled them to be exchanged for current silver.

PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, VF Details; Countermark: EF Details.
KM-Not listed; Basso-56; PNM#6-Not listed; PNM#16; PNM#21-Not listed; Cacho-Not listed; Gil-5-4-3-III. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837 (By Decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark: Type VI, crowned Y.II. within circle. Applied to the obverse and reverse of a 1829-Zs AO Mexico Republic 8 Reales (KM-377.13). This EXTREMELY RARE issue seldom appears on the market with few known examples, we have only about 15 instances of this occurring during the countermarking action for all countermarks and host types. The countermark on the obverse is deeply applied and bold while the countermark on the reverse has been nearly obliterated. Only a thin crescent of the initial countermark remains with the left foot of the "Y" poking out on right near eagles tail. The surfaces exhibit signs of handling consisting for the grade with even wear displaying an attractive rich gray patina. Close inspection of the reverse reveals a small "x" accounting for the details designation, long since toned over matching the rest of the coin. Despite its shortcoming a highly interesting example from this complex series that is sure to excite many advanced collectors.

Commonly referred to as a "double countermark", this categorization is overly simplified and fails to explain the reason how this could have occurred. Per the original decree of 2 October 1832, the stamps were to be applied to the obverse of all coins submitted to the countermarking office. Occasionally, examples can be found with a single countermark on the wrong side of the host and for all intents and purposes is an error in the countermarking process. Exceptions to this are the Chile "Volcano" Pesos and Guatemala (Central American Republic) 8 Reales where distinguishing the obverse from the reverse was not straight forward and appear bearing a single countermark on either side. The survivors that were first countermarked on the reverse and subsequently flipped over and struck again on the obverse are examples of correcting said error. This is particularly important indicating that the error was caught immediately and corrected with the same countermark. The stamps used on corrected examples can be linked to single countermarked and perforated pieces and are significant to the series.

Estimate: $10000 - $20000
