SCOTLAND. Scotland - Mexico. Lanarkshire. New Lanark. 5 Shillings, ND (ca. 1815-20). NGC EF-45; Countermark: AU Standard.
KM-CC66; Manville-69; Brunk-52665. Issued by Robert Owen and partners. Countermark: 5/- surrounded by: "Payable at Lanark Mills" with lozenge stop. Applied to the obverse of a 1799-Mo FM Mexico bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV) (KM-109). Beautifully preserved and very attractive, this handsome example exhibits a lovely rich old envelope patina with remaining luster in the protected areas. The countermark is deeply applied on a nicely preserved host with plenty remaining detail. This high grade example offers a pleasing appearance with much originality.

Originally New Lanark mills was owned and operated by David Dale who retired in 1799 and sold New Lanark, at the time the largest cotton mill in Scotland, for 60,000 pounds to Mr. Robert Owen of Manchester. When Mr. Owen became managing partner on 1 January 1800 he quickly began to tighten control of costs, quality, management practices, monitor wages and time-keeping resulting in the dismissal of a number of employees. Though he was strict he was fair and won the approval of his employees. The mill offered free education for children and had a church among other improvements in living standards. It is also important to note that according to Manville the 5 Shillings denomination was issued in two periods. The first was issued prior to 1811 while the second period was between 1815-20. Manville also states that due to degradation the ring punch must have been employed for an extended period. The present piece exhibits signs of die deterioration in the form of cracks and chipping which indicates later use and was why it was attributed to the later period of issue.

SCOTLAND. Scotland - Mexico. Lanarkshire. Glasgow. 6 Shillings, ND (ca. 1812-15). NGC VF-25; Countermark: EF Standard.
KM-CC40; Manville-51. Possibly issued by D. Campbell & Company(?). Countermark: "DC" with six-leaved (twelve-pointed) rosette. Applied to the obverse of a 1791-Mo FM Mexico bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV) (KM-109). This lovely example displays rich slate patina with iridescent hues that pop out when tilted in the light. The countermarks are bold, though the rosette is a bit uneven, on a wholesome moderately worn host coin. A pleasing example of this seldom encountered issue with good eye appeal.

To our knowledge the issuer of the "DC" countermarks is unknown with several possible attributions, but with nothing definitive. Major Fred Pridmore suggested a possible issuer of David Corse with his years of activity as a cotton spinner and yarn manufacturer between 1817-28. His years of activity are much later than the simple design of the countermark would indicate. Another issuer that is even less likely, was a branch office of the Deanston Company. This was not a full operations office, it was merely out of convenience and would not have required the use of tokens. The most reasonable attribution was posed by Walter Allen, who suggested "D. Campbell & Company" as the issuers, manufacturers of inkle. It appears there were two possibly successive issuers for these countermarks, first Dale Campbell who was active from as early as 1789 to about 1806 at various addresses. The second was Dick Campbell who was active from about 1809 to at about 1828 with the same address until at least that time. However, due to lack of further documentation this attribution is still speculative.

SCOTLAND. Scotland - France. Lanarkshire. Dalzell. 5 Shillings, ND (ca. 1820). PCGS GOOD-4.
KM-CC22; Manville-20; Brunk-51220. Issued by Arahibald James Hamilton. Countermark: raised legend in circular indent. Applied to the reverse of a 1812-B (Rouen Mint) France 5 Francs of Napoleon (KM-694.2). The countermark is deeply applied on a well worn host displaying rich slate gray patina with a slight iridescent sheen while the high point offer a lighter coloration. Napoleon Five Francs are the typical undertype for this mark, all part of a consignment brought from Belgium to this Scottish farm by Archibald Hamilton. According to Manville, of the 22 examples he recorded the present piece is the only documented example of the date. A pleasing and wholesome example of the type offering much originality.

SCOTLAND. Scotland - Mexico. Lanarkshire. Glasgow. 6 Shillings, ND (ca. 1812-15). PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, VF Details.
KM-CC40; Manville-51. Possibly issued by D. Campbell & Company(?). Countermark: "DC" with six-leaved (twelve-pointed) rosette. Applied to the obverse of a 1803-Mo FT Mexico bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV) (KM-109). The countermarks are deeply applied and even on a decently preserved host coin displaying attractive old cabinet patina with minor earthen deposits in the crevasses. Moderately worn, this handsome looking piece offers much originality with good eye appeal. Close inspection reveals graffiti on both the obverse and reverse that appears to be have been on the coin prior to being countermarked. An interesting example of the type with easily identifiable characteristics and a pleasing appearance.

To our knowledge the issuer of the "DC" countermarks is unknown with several possible attributions, but with nothing definitive. Major Fred Pridmore suggested a possible issuer of David Corse with his years of activity as a cotton spinner and yarn manufacturer between 1817-28. SCOTLAND. Scotland - Mexico. Perthshire. Deanston. 5 Shillings, ND. NGC EF-45; Countermark: AU Standard.
Manville-X22 (this piece listed). Countermark: Beehive on stand, legend around within solid border. Applied to the obverse of a 1768-Mo MF Mexico pillar 8 Reales of Charles III (KM-105). The countermark is boldly applied with strong central designs, though the legends are slightly doubled, on a wholesome nicely preserved host coin. The surfaces display attractive rich mottled gray patina with a slight iridescent sheen that pops out when tilted in the light. A pleasing example of this seldom encountered and interesting RARE issue.

It is interesting to note that according to Manville this issue did not appear on the market until sometime during the 1930s. Supposedly, the die was found in a desk drawer some 100 years after the fact, but shows no signs of age or degradation. In fact, aside from the three known examples on colonial Mexican hosts, most others are on base metal blanks. Though the origins of this issue are unknown, it is still an interesting aspect of the Scottish countermark series.

Close inspection reveals a thin scratch on the obverse in the right field accounting for the details designation, long since toned over matching the rest of the coin.
