| Lot description: SCOTLAND. Scotland - Mexico. Lanarkshire. Glasgow. 6 Shillings, ND (ca. 1812-15). NGC VF-25; Countermark: EF Standard. KM-CC40; Manville-51. Possibly issued by D. Campbell & Company(?). Countermark: "DC" with six-leaved (twelve-pointed) rosette. Applied to the obverse of a 1791-Mo FM Mexico bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV) (KM-109). This lovely example displays rich slate patina with iridescent hues that pop out when tilted in the light. The countermarks are bold, though the rosette is a bit uneven, on a wholesome moderately worn host coin. A pleasing example of this seldom encountered issue with good eye appeal. To our knowledge the issuer of the "DC" countermarks is unknown with several possible attributions, but with nothing definitive. Major Fred Pridmore suggested a possible issuer of David Corse with his years of activity as a cotton spinner and yarn manufacturer between 1817-28. His years of activity are much later than the simple design of the countermark would indicate. Another issuer that is even less likely, was a branch office of the Deanston Company. This was not a full operations office, it was merely out of convenience and would not have required the use of tokens. The most reasonable attribution was posed by Walter Allen, who suggested "D. Campbell & Company" as the issuers, manufacturers of inkle. It appears there were two possibly successive issuers for these countermarks, first Dale Campbell who was active from as early as 1789 to about 1806 at various addresses. The second was Dick Campbell who was active from about 1809 to at about 1828 with the same address until at least that time.
