Lot description:

AZORES. Azores - Mexico. 1200 Reis, ND (1887). Luis I. NGC EF Details--Cleaned; Countermark: AU Standard.
KM-29 (for denomination); Gomes-L1.21.03. Issued by decree of 31 March 1887. Countermark: Small crown above GP within circular incuse. Applied to the obverse of a 1756-Mo MM Mexico pillar 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII (KM-104.2). The countermark is boldly applied with fine details on a decently preserved host. The surfaces exhibit signs of handling one would associate with the grade and hints of tone in the protected areas. Close inspection reveal evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued. A presentable example of this seldom encountered host that is sure to excite many collectors.

Article I of the decree states that all foreign silver coins are to be submitted within 30 days of publication to be countermarked in the districts of Angra, Horta or Ponta Delgada. These countermarks should have been applied to damaged or badly worn coins, for which the decree was intended, but must have been executed without prejudice to any coin that was submitted for countermarking.

Ex: Clyde Hubbard Collection.

Estimate: $1000 - $1500
