Lot description:

MEXICO. Charles III/Birth of an Heir Silver Medal, 1780. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-61.
Grove-K-78; Betts-577. By G. A. Gil. Diameter: 52mm. Obverse: Bust of Charles III, and jugate busts of Charles IV and Maria Luisa, facing one another; Reverse: Helmeted and armored female personification of Spain presenting infant (Carlos Domingo) to female personification of Mexico kneeling left. VERY RARE in silver, this impressive, Mint State survivor presents a high degree of prooflike brilliance in the fields, though some hairlines are noted.

Carlos Domingo was the eldest son of the, at the time, heir apparent, Charles IV. This son would die in 1783 at the age of three, and the next male sons to Charles and Maria Luisa would be twins born in September 1783. They, too, would pass away just over a year later, around the time that the fourth male son, the future Ferdinand VII, would be born.

Estimate: $1000 - $2000
