Lot description:

GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (1040-42). Lund (in Denmark) Mint; Alwine, moneyer. Harthacnut. NGC MS-63.
S-1170. Weight: 0.96 gms. Danish imitative type. Obverse: + HΛRÐECNVT, draped bust left, raising hand; Reverse: : AL-PIN-E ΘN LVD, voided long cross, with pellet at center and crosses in two angles. Unusually well-defined for a Danish issue, bearing entirely legible legends and a bold, though rather stumpy, portrait. Fully Mint State, with slightly rough but as-made metal texture throughout.

Succeeding his brother as the rightful heir of the English throne, Harthacnut was the last Dane to rule in England. Harthacnut ruled with an iron fist with little time for advisement, and at times ordered the burning and destruction of towns. He died in 1042 while attending a wedding, during which he consumed a vast amount of alcohol.

Estimate: $1500 - $2000
