Polierte Platte (Proof) Zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden in England lediglich kleine Goldnominale geprägt. Nachdem das letzte 5 Guinea Stück 1777 geprägt wurde, wurde bis zum Jahr 1820 in der alten Tower Mint keine Großgoldmünze mehr hergestellt. Erst nach dem Umzug der Münze von der Tower Mint zum Tower Hill und den neuen fortschrittlichen Prägetechniken dank der Dampfmaschinen kehrte eine große Goldmünze der britischen Königinnen und Könige in der Tradition der 5 Guinea Stücke nach England zurück. Diese Probe erschien 1820 kurz vor dem Tod Georgs III. in zwei unterschiedlichen Typen. Die eine weist die erhabene Randschrift DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI LX auf, die andere einen glatten Rand. Beide zusammen wurden nur in 25 Exemplaren hergestellt, wobei heute lediglich 10-14 Exemplare bekannt sind. Von dem Stück mit glatten Rand sind gar nur 2 Exemplare in der Literatur erwähnt. Der Medailleur beider Typen war der italienische Künstler Benedetto Pistrucci (1783-1855), der sich ab 1815 in Großbritannien aufhielt. Schnell machte er aufgrund seiner künstlerischen Begabung Bekanntschaft mit William Wellesley-Pole, dem Münzmeister, der ihn direkt engagierte. Für die neue Münzserie sollte Pistrucci die Stempel anfertigen. Auf den Sovereigns trägt der Heilige Georg eine zerbrochene Lanze und ist umgeben vom Motto des Hosenbandordens, erst auf der Crown bekommt er ein Schwert in seine Hand. Dieses Design mit dem heiligen Georg findet sich teils bis heute auf britischen Münzen und ist eins der ikonischsten Münzbilder des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. At the beginning of the 19th century, only small gold denominations were minted in England. After the last 5 Guinea piece was struck in 1777, no more large gold coins were produced at the old Tower Mint until 1820. It was only after the move of the mint from Tower Mint to Tower Hill and the new advanced minting techniques thanks to steam engines that a large gold coin of the British kings and queens returned to England in the tradition of the 5 Guinea pieces. This specimen appeared in two different types in 1820 shortly before the death of George III. One has the raised edge lettering DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI LX, the other, much rarer variety has a plain edge. Only 25 examples of both types combined were produced, and only 10-14 are known today. Of those 25 in total, only 2 specimens with a plain edge are mentioned in the literature what makes this on of the rarest large gold coins of the entire series of 5 Pound pieces. The medalist of both types was the Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci (1783-1855), who lived in Great Britain from 1815. Due to his artistic talent, he quickly made the acquaintance of William Wellesley-Pole, the master of the mint, who employed him directly. Pistrucci was to produce the dies for the new coin series. On the sovereigns, St. George carries a broken lance and is surrounded by the motto of the Order of the Garter; only on the crown does he receive a sword in his hand.
