Lot description:

Gabriel Bethlen / Bethlen Gábor (1613-1629). Homage Ducat in Silver, 1613. Szeben (Sibiu) / Hermannstadt. 8.81g. Possibly 18th or 19th Century strike.
VERA / SALVS CHRI / STVS TVA SCE / PTRA SALVTE / CORONET / .1613. (The "C" in CHRISTVS smaller than the other letters, the second O and N distinctly separate). Reverse: Crowned shield with crossed swords and inverted Saxon triangle CI-BI; .ET FERAT AVSPICIIS PROSPEKA VELA TVIS.. Resch illustrates the Silver Homage Ducat on page 257, number 12 (plate 85) calling it a falsification. But his illustration clearly shows the "C" in Christus the same size as the other letters and the O and N as not distinct. Moritz Wormser, notes in "Coins and Medals of Transylvania in New York Collections," American Journal of Numismatics Vol. XLVIII, 1915, p.170 that the Montenuovo (Collection) catalogue points to the characteristics as on this piece here as that of genuine specimens. Wormser, AJN XLVIII, 1915, p. 169, 41; Martin Schmeizel "Erläuterung Gold- und Silberner Münzen von Siebenbürgen," Magdeburg, 1748, p. 65. Extremely Fine.

Estimate: 2500 USD
