Very Fine Details. Christopher Bathori was made Captain of Várad (now Oradea in Romania) by his younger brother Stephen when the latter became Voivode of Transylvania on the death of John Sigismund Zápolya, the first Prince of Transylvania (who both brothers served as military commanders). After Stephen was elected King of Poland, he adopted the title of Prince of Transylvania and passed the mantle of voivode in January 1576 to Christopher, whose appointment was confirmed by the Sublime Porte at the Diet of Gyulafehérvár latter that summer. During Christopher's reign the Jesuits were granted lands in Transylvania in order to strengthen the Roman Catholic Church there notably after troubles with the country's Unitarian Church dissenters. After his second wife Elisabeth Bocskai died in early 1586, Christopher fell seriously ill. In order to prevent the installation of an Ottoman candidate, the Diet elected his only living son, Sigismund, who was still a minor, as voivode before his father's death. Christopher Bathori died in Gyulafehérvár on the 27th of May, 1581.
