Oliver Cromwell, Shilling, 1658, by Thomas Simon, OLIVAR . D . G . R . P . ANG . SCO . HIB &c PRO, laureate and draped bust left, rev. PAX QVÆRITVR . BELLO, crowned shield of the Protectorate, straight-milled edge, 5.98g, 6h (Lessen J28; ESC 1005; Bull 254; Spink 3228), a small pawnbroker's mark to right of crown, otherwise residually lustrous, with pleasant cabinet toning, near very fine, an enduringly popular type.
