| Lot description: Wessex, Alfred the Great (871-899), 'Cross and Lozenge' Type, Penny, AD 875-880, Lulla, AELFRED REX SAX, diademed and draped bust right, rev. LVLLA MONETA, cross pattee with central lozenge, cross saltire at centre, 1.337g [20.63grns], 2h (PAS GLO-47F292 this coin; EMC 1977.0202 same dies [Cathedral Green, Winchester]; EMC 2020.0402 same obverse die [Semington]; Naylor 2022, 93-96; Blackburn and Keynes 53-54; North 629; BMC V; Spink 1058), slightly crimped and wavy flan, otherwise softly field toned, areas of die clogging to legends, otherwise uniformly bold for strike, a bolder very fine, very rare to commerce, especially as a legitimate single-site find. EMC 2023.0354 ~, , , The following observation was appended to the PAS record: This is the first 'Cross-and-Lozenge' Penny found in Gloucestershire (see Naylor 2022 (in Naylor and Standley 2022): 221-5). There are two main styles for the 'Cross-and-Lozenge' coinage struck both of which are outside of the mainstream styles attributed to Canterbury, London and Winchester, and it has been argued that they may have been struck in western or southern Mercia, perhaps at Oxford (Naylor 2002 (in Naylor and Standley 2022): 96). This coin shares an obverse die link with EMC 2020.0402 [Semington, February 2020]. Estimate: £10000 - £12000 |  |
