Lot description: ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Wessex. Æthelstan. 924-939. AR Penny (22mm, 1.34 g, 12h). Tower type (BMC iv). York mint; Etram, moneyer. + AEDELSTAN REX A, small cross pattée / X X/ DO IS/ ETRAM/ M–O in field around building set on ground line. Blunt, Aethelstan 440; SCBI 34 (BM), 239 (same dies); North 683; SCBC 1100. Light golden toning, minor lamination on the reverse. Near EF. Very rare, especially so of this moneyer. From the Causeway Collection. Ex Eboracum 'Ryedale' Hoard (Spink 228, 25 March 2015), lot 471. The Tower type of Aethelstan is unparalleled in his coinage. Christopher Blunt posited that it may have been an ecclesiastical issue, struck for Hrothweard, Archbishop of York, between Aethelstan's capture of the city in 927 and the Archbishop's death in 931. If this is the case, the tower on the reverse is likely to be a depiction of York Minster. Estimate: 6000 USD |
