ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Wessex. Æthelwulf. 839-858. AR Penny (20mm, 1.38 g, 6h). Inscribed Cross type. Rochester mint; Tirweald, moneyer. Struck circa 854-858. + ΛEÐELVVVLF REX, draped bust right / TIRVA LD MO N E T Λ arranged on limbs of, and around, beaded cross. Naismith R41.2c (this coin, illustrated as R41.1b); SCBI 26 (East Anglia), 1109; North 618; SCBC 1051. Lightly toned, slight bow to flan. Good VF. Excellent metal for issue. Rare.
