Lot description: ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Mercia. Offa. 757-796. AR Penny (18mm, 1.51 g, 9h). Heavy coinage, non-portrait type. Canterbury mint; Babba, moneyer. Struck circa 792/3-796. OFFA between two beaded lines; ornamental sprays above and below / BABBA between two beaded lines; above, two pellets in pelleted annulets flanked by trefoils; below, two annulets within circles of pellets, trefoil to left, quatrefoil to right. Chick –; SCBI –; North –; SCBC 908. Toned, very slight bow to flan and small die flaw on reverse. Near EF. A handsome example of this issue. Extremely rare, unrecorded type.
