Michal's reign was marked by internal tension. Elected to the throne with the backing of the Polish nobility, who hoped his inexperience would make him more pliable, he was opposed to the pro-French camp, led by Jan Sobieski, who would ultimately succeed him. At the same time, the country was threatened by the Ottomans, who would invade in 1672, reaching as far as Biecz (Bietsch). Michael died in 1673.
