ITALY, Montalcino. Republic of Siena in exile. 1555-1559. AR Parpagliola da 10 quattrini (22mm, 1.69 g, 7h). In the name of Henri II of France. Dated 1556. She-wolf standing left, suckling the twins Romulus and Remus / Cross fleurée over small saltire. MIR 342. Light porosity, usual weak strike. VF. Rare.

When Siena was conquered by the forces of Medici-controlled Florence, a group of Sienese refugees fled to Montalcino. The city held out until 1559, when it was ultimately conquered and subsumed into the territories of Florence.
