The Couronne d'or is believed to depict the Crown of Charlemagne, which was used for the coronation of all French kings from 875 to 1590. Initially comprised of a heavily jewelled band, four large fleur-de-lis were added during the reign of Philip Augustus. The Crown of Charlemagne was probably chosen by Philippe VI for a coin type to emphasis his legitimacy against the claims to the French throne of Edward III of England.
