[...]GLOR[...] [...EXERC...] Partly visible legend in Kufic; to right roman soldier standing front, head to left, holding spear in his left hand. Rev. [...]CON[...]AVG[...] Partly visible legend in Kufic with star in field to left. Repatinated and with an edge crack, otherwise, fine.


From an American collection, acquired before 2011.

This coin was overstruck on a Constantinian 'GLORIA EXERCITVS' follis. Overstrikes of Arab-Byzantine coins on Roman coins are well attested, dating mostly to the reigns of Mu'awiya I (AH 41-60 / AD 661-680) and Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (AH 65-86 / AD 685-705).

'Allāh / aḥad Allāh / al-ṣamad' ('Allah is One, Allah is Absolute' in Arabic; Qurʾān 112: 1-2); around, 'lā ilāha illā Allāh waḥdahū lā sharīka lahū' ('There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him' in Arabic). Rev. 'Muḥammad / rasūl / Allāh' ('Muhammad is the messenger of Allah' in Arabic); around, 'bism Allāh ḍuriba hādhā al-fals bi Ḥarrān ...' ('In the name of Allah. This fals was struck in Harran ...' in Arabic). Album 192. Rare. Areas of weakness and with some corrosion and deposits, otherwise, very fine.
