ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. Uncertain period (post-reform), AH 77-132 / AD 697-750. Fals (Bronze, 22 mm, 3.68 g, 2 h), Hulwan (?). Within two concentric dotted circles, 'lā ilāha / illā – Allāh / waḥdahū' ('There is no deity but Allah, the One' in Arabic); star at center. Rev. Within a dotted circle, 'Muḥammad / rasūl / Allāh' ('Muhammad is the messenger of Allah' in Arabic); around, 'bism Allāh ḍuriba hādhā al-fals bi Ḥulwān(?)' ('In the name of Allah. This fals was struck in Hulwan(?)' in Arabic). Album -. Extremely rare. Areas of weakness and with some deposits and a flan crack, otherwise, very fine.

This coin was overstruck on a Constantinian 'GLORIA EXERCITVS' follis. Overstrikes of Arab-Byzantine coins on Roman coins are well attested, dating mostly to the reigns of Mu'awiya I (AH 41-60 / AD 661-680) and Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (AH 65-86 / AD 685-705).
