ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Fals (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.90 g, 3 h), 'Standing Caliph' type, Hims (Emesa), circa AH 74-80 / AD 693-700. Within a dotted circle, caliph standing facing, bearded, placing his right hand on the hilt of his sword; to right and left, 'li ʿabd Allah ʿAbd al-Malik – amīr al-muʾminīn' ('For the servant of Allah, Abd al-Malik, Commander of the Believers' in Arabic). Rev. Within a dotted circle, transformed cross on four steps; to left and right, 'ḍuriba – bi Ḥimṣ' ('Struck in Hims' in Arabic); around, 'lā ilāha illā [Allāh waḥdahū Mu]ḥamma[d] rasūl Allāh' ('There is no deity but Allah, the One. This coin was overstruck on a Constantinian 'GLORIA EXERCITVS' follis. Overstrikes of Arab-Byzantine coins on Roman coins are well attested, dating mostly to the reigns of Mu'awiya I (AH 41-60 / AD 661-680) and Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (AH 65-86 / AD 685-705).

Within a central circle, 'bi amr / Marwān ibn / Bashīr' ('By the order of Marwan ibn Bashir' in Arabic); in the margin, 'Muḥammad rasūl Allāh ar[salahū bi al-hudā]' ('Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. He [i.e. Allah] sent him with guidance' in Arabic). Rev. Within a central circle, jerboa to right; in the margin, 'bi[sm Allāh ḍuriba] hādhā al-fals bi Ḥimṣ' ('In the name of Allah. Large Zangid tamgha within a circle of pellets; around the circle, 'al-Malik al-Mu'azzam Wali ahdudu al-Malik al Zahir' in Kufic. Rev. Legend in Kufic reading 'al-Imam al-Mustansir / billah al-Sultan al-a'-/zam Kaikhusrau; around, 'Duriba bi'l-Jazira / sana tis' / wa thalathin / wa sittami'a'. Spengler & Sayles 89.
