| Lot description: Tibet, Ganden Phodrang, in the name of Guangxu (1875-1908), silver Rupee, (c. 1939-42), Kangding mint, Szechuan, bust of Guangxu facing left wearing cap and floral garment with collar, rev. four Chinese characters read top to bottom, right to left with vertical flower in the centre, 四造省川, all surrounded by floral wreath, edge milled (KM Y.3.3; cf. L&M 359). Graded by NGC as AU Details, Cleaned. NGC Certification 6944739-009 In 1896, the Viceroy of Szechuan Province appealed the Imperial Court to establish a mint in the Chengdu Arsenal near the Tibetan border, which was eventually granted and built in 1898. Due to the prevalence of British Indian coinage circulating in Tibet and neighbouring Nepal at the time, the mint commissioned the striking of a full, half, and quarter Rupee under the auspices of Szechuan Province. Between 1902 and 1942, these so-called 'Szechuan Rupees' became the dominant currency in the region. Those Rupees minted between 1939-42 during the Second World War were considered unofficial war issues, and therefore not included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Gold & Silver Coins by Lin Gwo Ming and Ma Tak Wo. x This item is subject to 5% import duty.
