In 1896, the Viceroy of Szechuan Province appealed the Imperial Court to establish a mint in the Chengdu Arsenal near the Tibetan border, which was eventually granted and built in 1898. Due to the prevalence of British Indian coinage circulating in Tibet and neighbouring Nepal at the time, the mint commissioned the striking of a full, half, and quarter Rupee under the auspices of Szechuan Province. Between 1902 and 1942, these so-called 'Szechuan Rupees' became the dominant currency in the region.
