x Italy, Papal States, Pope Innocent XII (1691-1700), silver Piastra, 1693, Rome mint, bust of Pope Innocent XII right, wearing cammauro, mozzetta and stole, INNOCEN. .XII. PONT. M. A. III, signed P. P. BORNER. F. below truncation, rev. Charity seated right, nursing a child in her lap, a second child stands to left offering his hands, a third lies at her feet, column in left field with date 1693 incuse and coat of arms of Monsignor Farzetti below, NOVIT IVSTVS CAVSAM PAVPERVM, 31.77g (Berman 2229; Dav. 4103; KM 569). Once harshly cleaned and re-toned, wear to higher points both sides, some striations to obverse portrait, otherwise fine and rare.

Pope Innocent XII, born Antonio Pignatelli, was ruler of the Papal States and Head of the Catholic Church from 12th September 1691 until his death on 27th September 1700. Elected after the death of Pope Alexander VIII earlier in 1691, he received 53 out of 61 of the Conclave's votes. He continued the policies of Pope Innocent XI, taking a hard stance against nepotism within the Church, issuing a papal bull strictly forbidding the practice.
