Accession of George I, 1714, silver medal by Georg W. Vestner, laureate and draped bust right, star below, GEORG LVD. D.G. M. BRIT. FR. ET HIB. REX DVX B & L. S.R.I. ELEC. rev. a lion, the constellation of Leo, one star brighter than the rest, bisected by an astronomical measure and astrological signs, REGNORVM ALBIONIS NVNC IVRA GEORGIVS INTRAT. ANNO MDCCXIV. D. XII. AVGVSTI., plain edge, 44mm, 29.6g (Eimer 464; MI ii 421/4 var.). With some small nicks, scratches and bagmarks, otherwise near extremely fine, a beautiful and popular design.

This medal was produced by Nuremburg medallist Georg Wilhelm Vestner. During August, the sun passes through the constellation of Leo, and is intended in this design to symbolise George I entering the Kingdom of the British Lion at that time.

The medal is sold with a type written document dated 20th November 1950. It addresses a Colonel Harold T. F. Petterson from a Wolfgang Bode, who is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Jlseder Hütte. Bode writes to express his dismay that Petterson is leaving Germany, having spent the last 5.5 years in the country following the war and moving to Rhineland-Westphalia. In the letter, Hütte explains that he is gifting Petterson the medal, in the hope that it is symbolic of the common history of Germany and England, and contains his wish that good relations between the countries will prosper in the future.

Petterson was working in the Ilseder Hütte ironworks in lower saxony, where Bode was the Chairman. Petterson was part of an operation concerning the administration of justice (including the prosecution of War Criminals) within the British zone. The operation reference FO 1060 and his report is referenced in the National Archives as FO 1060/4112.
