Lot description:

ASIA MINOR. Uncertain mint. Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. (Bronze, 20 mm, 7.92 g, 2 h), Circa 30 BC. Bare head of Octavian/Augustus (?) to right. Rev. Fiscus, sella questoria and hasta; below, Q. AMNG 228. FITA 13–19. RPC I, 5410. Scarce. Areas of striking weakness and some marks, otherwise, about very fine.

The attribution of this issue to a certain mint or region is still open for discussion. In the past, it has been attributed to a Macedonian mint and the portrait identified either as Brutus (Friedlander), Caesar (Grant), or to the governor of of Syria, Gaius Sosius. RPC prefers a Cilician or Syrian origin, with a suggestion that the portrait is Octavian. Issues of similar portrait style include the "Princeps Felix" coinage from Cilicia (RPC 4082-3). For the discussion in RPC, see RPC I, 5409.
