ROMAN BRITAIN. Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, A.D. 286-293. Billon antoninianus. 3.87 gm. 25 mm. London mint. His radiate and draped bust right; IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG / Pax standing left; PAX AVG around, F - O flanking, ML below. RIC V.2 101. SEng 672a. Extremely Fine; choice glossy gray-green patina with hints of silvering. Marvelous portrait sharply struck on an unusually broad flan with a striking crack at the top that is almost entirely outside the design area.

Born in Menapia in modern Belgium, Carausius as a young man made his living as a sailor, After joining the Roman Army and demonstrating his naval skills, he was given command of the Channel Fleet with orders to confront Saxon and Frankish pirates raiding the coasts of northern Gaul and southeastern Britain. Instead, he stole their booty for himself and became the usurper-emperor of the island province of Britain and northern coast of Gaul. Eventually he was assassinated by his chief minister Allectus who took his place as rebel emperor.
This is a grand example of the usurper-pirate in Britain and NW Gaul.

Estimate: 250 USD
