BYZANTINE SEALS. Theodoros, primikerios, hebdomarios and chartoularios of the dromos of the Anatolikoi, circa 11th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 25 mm, 5.44 g, 12 h). O / A/ΓI/Ο/S - N/I/KO/ΛΑ/S Nimbate facing bust of Saint Nicholas, raising hand in benediction and holding the book of the Gospels. Rev. +ΘΕΟ/ΔΩΡ ΠΡΙ/MIK EBΔΟ/MAP ΧΑΡΤ/ΤΟΥ ΑΝΑΤ,/ ΔΡΟΜ in six lines, the whole within round dotted border. Cf. DO Seals 3, 86.6., possibly of the same officer, but this seal certainly later in his carrier. Channel break on obverse, otherwise, very fine.
From a European collection.

As hebdomarios, Leo was normally serving in the imperial Palace of Constantinople. This means that he was temporarily serving in the Anatolikoi theme under the orders of the emperor. The high quality of the engraving of this seal leads us to the assumption that it was actually produced in Constantinople an not in the east provinces of the Empire.
