Lot description: Theodosius II, 402-450. Solidus (Gold, 22 mm, 4.50 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis, 430-440. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG Pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Theodosius II facing, his head turned slightly to right, holding spear in his right hand and a shield, decorated with a horseman spearing a fallen foe, over his left shoulder. Rev. VOT XXX MVLT XXXX H / CONOB Constantinopolis seated left on throne, resting her left foot on prow, holding globus cruciger in her right hand and long scepter in her left; at her side, shield; in field to right, star. Depeyrot 81/1. MIRB 25b. RIC 257. Sharply struck and with a particularly attractive reverse. Minor die breaks on the obverse, otherwise, virtually as struck. From an American collection, privately acquired from Ariadne Galleries prior to 1982. An interesting minor detail about this coin is the rendering of the prow on the reverse, which ressembles an eagle's head. Estimate: 750 CHF |
