Lion right, attacking a bull collapsing to left with head raised to right; in exergue, stylized akanthos flower. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square with raised recesses. Desneux -. HGC 3.1, -. SNG ANS -. SNG Lockett -. Extremely rare and beautifully toned. An attractive and bold piece of particularly vigorous intermediate style. Some scratches and minor marks, otherwise, good very fine. From an American collection and the Jim Gilman Collection, ex Kirk Davis FPL 54, autumn 2008, 10. This piece represents a very rare intermediate emission between the archaic and the classical tetradrachms from Akanthos. Desneux did not know these dies, and the intermediate style is also not attested in other reference literature. Estimate: 3500 CHF |
