Lot description: Ancients Divus Trajan (AD 98-117). AE Contorniates (38mm, 34.56 gm, 2h). NGC Choice VF★ 5/5 - 1/5, plugged. Ca. mid-4th-early 5th centuries AD. DIVO NERVA-E TRAIANO, laureate head of Trajan right, wearing paludamentum on left shoulder / Scylla swimming facing on waves (on right), head left, two tails raised, rudder cradled in left arm, clutching head of helmsman with right hand on galley (to left); two men stand behind helmsman, one wearing conical cap (Ulysses?) brandishing shield and spear and other recoils, two figures waist deep in water with arms raised, wolf appendage devouring right figure, tails flanking central pine tree. Alföldi, Kontorniat 179. An incredible, massive piece, this coin vividly captures the entire myth of Ulysses versus Scylla, frozen in time and struck on a dark chocolate flan. https://coins.ha.com/itm/ancients/roman-imperial/ancients-divus-trajan-ad-98-117-ae-contorniates-38mm-3456-gm-2h-ngc-choice-vfand-9733-5-5-1-5-plugged/a/61375-25208.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61375-05202024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
