THRACIAN KINGDOM. Lysimachus (305-281 BC). AR tetradrachm (29mm, 16.81 gm, 12h). NGC XF 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. Posthumous issue of Uncertain Mint in Thrace, ca. 300-250 BC. Diademed head of deified Alexander III right, with horn of Ammon; dotted border / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΛΥΣΙΜΑXΟΥ, Athena enthroned left, Nike standing left in right hand, left arm resting on shield decorated with lion head boss, transverse spear beyond; XAP monogram in inner left field, uncertain symbol (appears to be conjoined foreparts of two horses as on Müller 130-138 (Perinthus), but facing inward instead of outward) and ΞΩ monogram in exergue. Unpublished in the standard references. Thompson -. Müller -, cf. 510 (same field monogram, Φ in exergue). HGC 3.II 1750. Cf. Classical Numismatic Group, E-Auction 295, 215; one example in each of Paris (BN), Florence, and St. Petersburg (Hermitage) collections. With surfaces aglow and toning that gently caresses each detail, this coin stands as a testament to the artistry of its creation.
