Lot description: John III Ducas (Vatatzes). Emperor of Nicaea, 1222-1254. AV Hyperpyron (26.5mm, 4.35 g, 6h). Transitional Coinage. Magnesia mint. Struck circa 1232. Christ Pantokrator enthroned facing; sigla: + | – / Half-length facing figures of John, wearing crown and loros, holding akakia, and the Theotokos, together holding long patriarchal cross between them. DOC (2a); SB 2072. Toned with some luster, spots of weakness, a few scratches. Near EF. John's transitional issues are significantly less commonly encountered than his more prevalent second coinage.
