Lot description: Vespasian. AD 69-79. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.23 g, 6h). Ephesus mint. Struck AD 70. Laureate head right / Titus and Domitian, veiled and togate, standing front, heads slightly left, eaching holding a patera; ΘΥ monogram (mintmark) in exergue. RIC II.1 1420 (R3); RPC II –; RSC 249. Lightly toned. Near EF. Extremely rare with this mintmark in the exergue. When Ian Carradice and Ted Buttrey produced the second fully revised edition of RIC II.1 they knew of only one example of this rarity. Estimate: 200 USD |
