Lot description: KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Philip III – Antigonos I Monophthalmos. Circa 323-310 BC. AR Obol (9mm, 0.57 g, 7h). In name and types of Alexander III the Great. Uncertain mint in Mesopotamia. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; monogram in left field, [control mark below throne]. Cf. Price 3793–5. Light roughness. VF. Very rare. The attribution and dating of these issues are highly speculative. The issues of Price 3791–5 are unlikely to be associated to the previous group, Price 3787-90 (which are most likely to be from Karrhai), or the following, Price 3796-3809 (which are likely issues from Tarsos under Antigonos I). As SC is unequivocal in stating that this group is not from the Seleukid period at Karrhai, these must now be assigned to an uncertain mint in Mesopotamia, pending further research.
