Lot description: Thraco-Macedonian Region, uncertain mint AR Hemiobol. Circa 5th century BC. Facing gorgoneion, with tongue protruding / Kantharos within incuse square. Tzamalis -, cf. 58/50; SNG ANS -; Klein 154 (Neapolis); Roma E-75, 176. 0.35g, 7mm, 9h. Near Very Fine; slight porosity, lightly toned. Very Rare. From the VCV Collection. Although Klein attributes this type to Neapolis, the style of the gorgoneion is quite dissimilar, and the kantharos is unlikely to have been used as a type there. Estimate: 30 GBP |
