Lot description: Ancients Philip I (AD 244-249). AR antoninianus (22mm, 11h). NGC AU. Rome, 6th officina, AD 248. IMP PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Philip I right, seen from behind / SAECVLARES AVGG, antelope standing left; IV in exergue. RIC IV.III 21 var. (VI in exergue). Ludi Saeculares (Secular Games) issue, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Rome The celator appears to have incorrectly engraved the officina as IV instead of the proper VI for this issue. The Ludi Saeculares series was broken down as such, but errors and mismatches are known: Officina I: Philip I, lion Officina II: Philip I, wolf and twins Officina III: Philip II, goat Officina IIII: Otacilia Severa, hippopotamus Officina V: Philip I, elk or stag Officina VI: Philip I, antelope RIC IV.III 18 has a reverse type for Philip I of an antelope walking left, with IIII in exergue, an unexplained anomaly, since officina IIII was proper to Otacilia Severa. Still, the use of IV for the officina mark on this specimen is likely an engraver's error instead of yet another type for IIII that would otherwise be an exception for a clearly defined series. https://coins.ha.com/itm/ancients/roman-imperial/ancients-philip-i-ad-244-249-ar-antoninianus-22mm-11h-ngc-au/a/61388-23134.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61388-05142024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
