SNG France 5, p.2, 33; von Fritze 96. In ancient Greek mythology and art, the "aegis" was a protective garment or shield associated with divine figures, particularly the goddess Athena. The aegis was often depicted as a cloak made of animal skin, typically that of a goat, and was adorned with the head of the Gorgon Medusa as its central feature.
