Lot description:

SYRIA, Decapolis. Gadara. Tiberius, 14-37. (Bronze, 15 mm, 4.51 g, 12 h), Year 101 = 37/38. TIBEPIω KΑΙCΑΡΙ Laureate head of Tiberius to right. Rev. ΓΑΔΑΡΑ L ΡΑ Turreted and veiled head of Tyche to right. Spijkerman 14. Clark, INR 18 (2023), 1e. Extremely rare with only eight known examples to RPC and no examples on Coinarchives. Good fine.

This type has been reattributed in the article "The Coinage of Gadara under Tiberius: Reattributions and Corrections" in Israel Numismatic Research 18 (2023). It was originally attributed to Caligula. However, Clark has identified the obverse legend and date to the reign of Tiberius. He concludes the following, "This coin may convincingly be dated L PA (year 101=37/8 CE) and thus establishes that Caligula did not issue any coins at Gadara. Considering that Tiberius died on 16 March 37 CE, it is likely that this coin was minted at the beginning of the year or up until shortly after his death when the news reached Galilee. Tiberius' death may explain why a smaller number of coins was produced for this issue" - INR 18, 2023:103.
