Lot description: BITHYNIA. Nicomedia. Vespasian, 69-79. (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.59 g, 12 h), struck under proconsul M. Plancius Varus. ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙΣΑΡΙ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΩ ΟΥΕΣΠΑΣΙΑΝΩ ΝΙΚ[ ] Laureate head of Vespasian to right. Rev. ΕΠΙ ΜΑΡΚΟΥ [ΠΛΑΝΚΙΟΥ ΟΥΑΡΟΥ] ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤΟΥ Rudder; to left and right, ΜΗ-ΤΡ. RPC II, 650A.1 (this coin). Apparently unique, only one coin known to RPC (this specimen). Some discolorations and somewhat rough surfaces, otherwise, very fine. M. Plancius Varus served as governor of the senatorial province of Bithynia and Pontus during the reign of Vespasian.
