Lot description: ROMAN EMPIRE; Galba. 68-69 AD. Æ Medallic Sestertius (38.68 gm; 36 mm). Rome, struck 68-69 AD. Extremely Rare, nearly 40 grams, struck in high relief. SER SVLPI GALBA IMP CAESAR AVG TR P Laureate bust right. LIBERTAS RESTITVTA S C. Togate emperor standing left, extending right hand to raise Libertas who kneels at feet; between the two in background, Roma stands right with shield on left arm. Ex Harlan J. Berk; ex- Artemide; ex Curtis L. Clay Collection. "Weighing in at nearly 40 grams, this behemoth of a sestertius was likely struck for use as a New Year's gift on January 1st of 69 AD, just two weeks before Galba's assassination. The reverse looks like it had a pin that went across it, and caused a unique circumstance of rusting on the reverse. A very impressive piece in-hand. New obverse die. Choice Good VF.
