His laureate head left; NERO CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR P IMP P P / Nero, in cuirass, on horseback prancing right, holding spear; foot-soldier in front holding vexillum advancing right, looking backwards; second foot-soldier running behind horse; DECVRSIO. RIC I 108. Very Fine; dark brown patina; scattered light corrosion. Bold portrait, and an unusually finely detailed reverse composition, the work of a skilled master engraver. Very Rare and in exceptional condition for the issue.

Ex Agora Auction 72 (5 June 2018) lot 219.

The Decursio was a military exercise Nero instituted for the praetorian guard to exhibit equestrian skills in a form of pageantry with the rearing horse. There are three distinct 'DECURSIO' types. This version, with the soldier leading Nero and without "S C" on the reverse, is the first issue and by far the rarest and hardest to find. This piece is unusually nice for the type.

Estimate: 850 USD
