ROMAN REPUBLICAN. M. Aemilius Scaurus and Pub. Plautius Hypsaeus. 58 B.C. AR denarius. 3.95 gm. 18 mm. Rome mint. Male figure (the Nabatean King Aretas) kneeling right, extending olive branch and holding reins of a camel standing right behind him; M SCAVR / AED CVR / EX S C / Jupiter in quadriga left; P HYPSAEVS / AED CVR / CAPTVM / C HYPSAE COS / PREIVE. Crawford 422/1a. Sydenham 919. RSC Aemilia 9, Plautia 9. Good Very Fine; nicely toned, well cantered and fresh; small scratch on obverse.

Ex G. Hirsch 181 (22 February 1994) lot 476.

The moneyer Scaurus while Governor of Syria invaded Nabatea and convinced Aretas to pay a bribe to him to desist. Interesting historical type, and a first to have a moneyer bragging about himself rather than an ancestor.
